Category C (Class 2) Driver Training

Practical Cat C (Class 2) driver training to help you gain your HGV licence and start driving professionally.

Category C Driver Training Course Details

A category C (Class 2) licence allows the holder to drive LGVs with a rigid body vehicle weighing over 3500kg with no more than 4 wheels and no detachable trailer.

These vehicles are designed for shorter journeys within urban areas that an articulated lorry may not be able access and is great starting point for many aspiring LGV drivers.

We offer an initial driving assessment to all candidates to gauge their abilities and determine how many hours of practical training may be needed.

Training is delivered in 4 hour sessions.  Multiple sessions will be needed depending on experience.

Common Category C Driver Training Questions

Prior to getting behind the wheel, aspiring drivers must first obtain a medical certificate and pass the theory exam, this can take several weeks. Once inside the cab, training length will vary.

While some drivers have taken undertaken an intensive driving course and passed within a week, some require more practice. We will go at the pace needed to ensure your training is passed.

Pending availability and the capability of the driver, it possible to train and pass within a week.

Not everybody passes first time. We can provide extra lessons where we can focus on the areas that need improvement and get you ready for your next test.

Hampshire Direct Training do not deal directly with job placement. However, we can put you in touch with one of our affiliates who specialises in arranging LGV driving work.

We request that BACS transfer is made prior to the start date of the course. Alternatively you can pay by card by visiting our office. We can also take instalments.

Quick Overview

  • Class 2 licence is a great place for new LGV drivers to start. It gives them the experience to learn driving a vehicle bigger than a car, with the potential to upgrade to a class 1 licence with most of the knowledge already gained.
  • The course will cover all the information need to be able to operate a class 2 vehicle (rigid) safely. Candidates will be shown all aspects of the vehicle they will be expected to use upon obtaining their licence.
  • We train our candidates one day at a time, until the candidate has enough experience and confidence to attempt their test. Because everyone is different, some candidates may need more practice than others.

Typically, we recommend candidates do one week training with us, followed by the test early the following week. E.g. Monday to Friday training, test on the following Monday following another day training.
  • We have a specialised training area that we use for manoeuvring at the same location of our offices. Our offices are located within DHL premises and we have access to their facilities, but please be mindful that there are other vehicles.

License Requirements

All applicants must be over 18 years of age and hold a full UK car licence (category B)

Medical requirements and D4 form info

A D4 form is mandatory medical examination form from the DVLA. You will need to arrange a medical exam with your local GP or private firm that specialises in drivers medical exams.

Once this is completed, you will need to send off your medical form to the DVLA with a completed D2 form.

Once this has been approved you will be issued a provisional licence which is needed before you can move on towards the practical stage. D4 forms can be obtained from the DVLA website here: https://contact.dvla.gov.uk/order-dvla-forms

Theory Test

Your theoretical knowledge of LGV driving will be put to the test. Similar to a car theory test, it is made up of two parts; multiple choice and hazard perception.

It is important that you take as much time as you can to study for your HGV theory so you will be well prepared for being out on the road.

Whether in person, or by providing the learning material to study in your own time, we will pass on our knowledge to help you pass these tests with flying colours.

Theory Test structure

Theory test - Part 1A - Multiple choice

The multiple choice section includes 100 questions and covers a wide range of topics, including road signs, regulations, vehicle handling, and road safety.

Commercial vehicle drivers may also encounter additional questions relevant to larger vehicles, such as load restrictions, the use of tachographs, and specific rules for buses and lorries. At least 85 of the 100 questions must be answered correctly to pass.

Theory test - Part 1B - Hazard Perception

The Hazard Perception test evaluates the drivers ability to spot potential hazards on the road and respond in a safe and timely manner.

The test involves watching video clips of road scenes where hazards develop, and the aim is to click the mouse as soon as a hazard is perceived. This test last for 30 minutes, containing 19 clips including 20 scorable hazards.

Each hazard correctly identified in a timely manner is worth 5 points. A total of 67 points out of 100 are required to pass.

Theory test - Part 2 - Case Study

This CPC Module assess the driver’s ability to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios that they may face in their day-to-day driving duties, and is specifically designed for professional drivers of commercial vehicles.

The study involves practical situations such as ensuring the well-being of the vehicle and its passengers or cargo, managing road safety, handling emergencies and legal responsibilities.

We are able to provide revision material to help drivers prepare for their theory test. These online guides can be accessed at any time and includes practice theory tests to prepare drivers for the real thing.
